I am Ray Hartley, the editor of The Times, South Africa, a newspaper which is to be launched in June 2007 under the Sunday Times umbrella. I have worked at the Sunday Times as a political journalist, political editor, Cape Town bureau chief, national news editor and am currently the deputy editor of the Sunday Times and its online editor.![]()

ahem. oops.
I look forward to seeing what becomes of The Times!
But if the Sunday Times really wanted to get with it – why not just create an online daily paper – that would save all the material costs, and allow news to be reported as it happens… print media is ancient by the Times it usually arrives on the doorstep!
Rouvanne – A very good point. We will be creating and delivering a 24/7 ‘online news service’ via our site, but we think there is a place for a paper that thinks differently. It will work if it doesn’t repeat stuff you’ve already digested/commented about online … Also, we don’t think print is dead. Our Sunday paper is thriving and we are producing a product for 120 000 people who want print enough to subscribe to it.
Absolutely – there is nothing better than a Sunday with the papers spread out in front of me!
I travel too much to subscribe – which puts me out of the running in getting The Times – but I will be interested to see what The Times will be able to offer.
Of course – online readers such as myself will be keeping a beady eye on the online edition! Good luck with this!
Hi Ray.Please don’t post this. I have an HR question.
Marita
I’ve heard that it is to be “subscribers only” — is that true?
Isn’t that rather limiting?
Steve – You have to subscribe to the Sunday Times to get the daily. But its a good deal: You pay less than the shelf life of the ST for a sub and you get 5 dailies thrown in …
When is the cut off date for subscribtions to the Sunday Times in order to receive The Times? And what option should one choose on Sunday Times’ website? Standard? Extra? huh?
I simply cannot wait for The Times to launch. I don’t think the SA newspaper industry has seen something this exciting in a long, long time. The last was the This Day euphoria- and then came the nadir. I’m holding fingers it won’t go the same way as This Day.
As a freelance print journalist (deciding if I should be a full-time broadcast journalist) I’m a bit disappointed that freelance opportunity is limited. But i’m looking forward to reading some fresh writing.
bb-aisha – I am enforcing a very strict cost-control agenda precisely because I want this paper not to suffer from the kind of spending party that has hobbled other start-ups. When we hit our straps and earn our way, we will look at outside contributors. Until then, we must make do with the staff we have.
Appel – There is no cut-off date as the subscription will run from whenever you take it out. But to ensure you get the launch edition of The Times, I would suggest taking your sub out now. Extra is the KZN local edition.
Will ad agencies get a launch issue of The Times?
Bokvel jou drol, love your corporate image.
Haha! Seriously Ray, I can’t find your email address anywhere and I would like to speak to you about a story unfolding at Hole in the Wall.

Hi, Ray
Good to see you are doing well – I always thought you would! It has been a long time. Our kids are now the age you were when you worked at HAP.
Good luck with The Times.
